CRYPTO MBA: An EdTech Case, 2022–2025

CRYPTO MBA

CRYPTO MBA was an online education platform that trained marketers for the crypto industry and Web3. I was its CTO and lead engineer: I built the platform, the integrations, and the on-chain diploma system. In January 2025 we deliberately shut the project down.

This is not a case about a successful exit. It is about what was built, what was tested in practice, and why closing was the right call. To my mind these write-ups are more useful than success stories, because you can see how the decision to stop actually gets made.

The problem: staffing a growing market

The original hypothesis looked solid. Crypto companies were actively hiring non-technical people, marketers, community managers, PR, and offering remote work at several thousand dollars a month. Yet almost nobody understood both the industry and marketing: ordinary digital courses handed out tools with no Web3 context, while crypto enthusiasts could not sell.

CRYPTO MBA closed exactly that gap: a three-month online programme with a foundation block on the industry (blockchain, DeFi, NFTs) and specialised tracks aimed at real vacancies, namely influence marketing, SMM and community, and PR. The teaching was done by practitioners from the field rather than academic lecturers.

What was built in CRYPTO MBA

As CTO of CRYPTO MBA I owned the whole technical side: platform architecture, backend and frontend, integration of the learning system, and the blockchain work.

  • An EdTech platform pairing webinars with an LMS: classes, materials, recordings, and knowledge checks in one perimeter.
  • Automated student onboarding, from payment to access to materials and the group, with no manual administration.
  • Telegram and Slack integrations, so course communication happened where the audience already lives rather than in a separate student portal nobody opens.
  • NFT diplomas on smart contracts: named certificates minted on-chain and verifiable by anyone without contacting us.

The NFT diploma was not marketing decoration but a fix for a real problem: a certificate from an unknown school is worth nothing if it cannot be checked. An on-chain record gives verifiability without trusting the issuer, so an employer confirms authenticity independently. For a platform in the crypto niche it was also a way of speaking the audience’s own language.

Project history: three iterations

  • June 2022, the first version. Mentoring from zero to hire in crypto marketing, working with students individually.
  • Autumn 2022, a school and a pause. We assembled a teaching team and launched a full programme, then had to suspend it: the crypto winter arrived and hiring in the industry collapsed.
  • July 2024, the second attempt. A reworked programme, new instructors, and a stronger career track with placement support.
  • January 2025, the shutdown. A strategic decision to end the project as an education platform and move to targeted consulting.

What the acquisition experiments produced

Over the life of CRYPTO MBA I tested more than ten acquisition formats: Telegram bots, content marketing, partner integrations with crypto projects, paid targeted advertising, webinar funnels, referral programmes, influencer collaborations, and cold B2B outreach.

The value of that work is not the list of channels but the accumulated data on the unit economics of acquiring a student in niche EdTech. Those numbers are what eventually drove the decision: in a narrow niche the cost of acquisition did not reconcile with the price of the product at any scale, no matter how many channels we cycled through.

Why the project was closed

The Russian-language crypto education market CRYPTO MBA operated in turned out to be too narrow to scale in the chosen model. We could have kept running at break-even on enthusiasm, but that would have drained resources from areas where the same expertise delivers more.

So in January 2025 I closed the platform and moved to targeted crypto-marketing consulting: minimal operating overhead, maximum value per unit of time. I consider that a normal management decision rather than a failure. The hypothesis was tested honestly, twice, under different market conditions, and the data answered clearly.

The engineering work did not disappear with it. I still apply the approach to verifiable credentials and automated onboarding in other projects, for instance in Monolith Plus, where trust in data is solved by similar means.

My role in the project

  • CTO and lead developer. The entire technical architecture of CRYPTO MBA, backend and frontend, and integration of the learning system.
  • Blockchain integration. I designed and implemented the NFT diploma minting system and the smart contracts that issued a verifiable certificate to every graduate.
  • Acquisition and unit economics. More than ten tested channels and the data on which the project’s fate was decided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CRYPTO MBA still running? No, the project closed in January 2025 as an education platform. The expertise moved into targeted crypto-marketing consulting.

Why put diplomas on a blockchain? A certificate from an unknown school is worth nothing if it cannot be checked. An on-chain record gives verifiability without trusting the issuer.

Why close it if the market was growing? Demand existed, but the niche was too narrow to scale: acquisition cost did not reconcile with the product price.

What did the platform consist of? Webinars plus an LMS with automated onboarding, Telegram and Slack integrations, and smart contracts for named NFT certificates.
